Mission Integration Debrief

It was the 1st day of the 5th month that three warriors met on a fateful day in a place know to some as Pinckney, land of the Pirates. These warriors completed feats unheard of nor attempted by mankind. These Chivarlous Knights of Michigan took upon themselves the duty to do as no one had done before them. They prepared for their glorious return to the skies to prove why man is greater than beast and endowed with abundant amounts of freetime. They knew that with their unique blend of mighty skills, that only they could complete the ardous task set before them. As they huddled around a contraption of ancient lumber, forged metals and materials imbued with the magnetic force of the earth, they chanted, Non Compos Mentis, Non Compos Mentis, Non Compos Mentis! Once for each warrior, once for each ball of furry that the device they had created would unleash upon the Marshes of Normandy. Beneath is a likely futile attemp to put these legendary tasks to mere words.

SIMP Launcher Prep - Friday Night
We were able to finish the launcher on the first night which consisted mainly of attaching the magenet and the battery. Now the launcher is actually releasing when we push the big red button. Its pretty awesome.
Dry Run - Saturday Morning
In the morning we did two passes over Normandy and enabled the recording in
the B3C2 software. It worked like a champ. Check out the specatular reflection photo of Kludge and sweet ground track from the recorded data. In the middle is the target location and in the top left is the airport we landed at to complete the ground testing. We also came up with a preliminary checklist:
On back-leg:
1) Ready door for drop
2) Secure Safety
3) Activate magnet
4) Load Balls
Lead up to release:
1) Turn in on 5-mile final
approach
2) Radio ground (Kermit) for
clearance to proceed
3) At 1:30 before release, turn on camera and secure in ball
4) When software indicates
SAFE, remove launcher safety
5) At approximately 7 seconds, activate SSP (THIS WILL
HAPPEN!)
6) Release

Ground Testing
The focus here was getting a good estimate of how long the middle bomb would take to exit the plane after the button was pushed. The results of our last set of tests were:
1.0s, 1.0s, 0.97s, 1.0s, and 1.04s
So we feel very confident using 1.0s for a delay in the software. We also measured the distance from where the gps is located to where the bomb is actually dropped from. All this will help us hone in on the target.

Drilling Holes...in Bowling Balls
Ever try to drill a hole, at and angle, in a bowling ball...Not exactly easy. We were in my Grandpa's
shop and my Uncle walks up and asks, "What the hell are you guys doing?". So I explained in the logical order:
1) We are drilling a hole in a bowling ball.
2) So we can put a video camera in it.
3) So we can drop it out of an airplane and see what happens.

Either way it was tough to keep the ball in place and it took the help of my cousin.

Target
Later in the day we attempted to create a target out of an old tarp and Kludge got a hold of the paint brush. I painted the circle in the middle and for some reason he need to add random splashes every where. He claimed it looked too much like a flag.

Mission Integration and More SSP

From May 1st to May 3rd Mission Integration is taking place in Pinckney, MI.
That's right Kludge and Creamy are coming up and we are making sure things are ready to go for the B5Q.

Check out this Super Secret video that hints at what the SSP is without giving it away (hopefully).

Mission Integration Details
The focus of Mission Integration will be to make sure that the SIMP Launcher is working properly and fits in the plane. We will be conducting extensive ground testing. We also need to decide what we are going to do about the door as well come up with full checklists for everything.

This year we are going to have real Mission Cards and in an attempt to be more organized.
More importantly we are going to drop more BOWLING BALLS!!

PATCHES!!!
We are having patches again thanks to Kludge's single minded focus on all things B5Q!
Also the patches will be bigger and better this year, enjoy:

SIMP Launcher, Ripple Multiple, SSP

We have been slacking on posting but not on getting things done. I have been on multiple practice flights. Kludge(Kult) has constructed a button which will be used to deactivate the magnet and drop the bombs. We have created a prototype for the SIMP(Small Indian Man Powered) Launcher. Below is a video demostrating the SIMP Launcher. The main difference will be the missing magnet which will be used to release the bombs instead of the current manual release. Kludge has also been working on a Super Secret Project (SSP) which is undergoing regorious testing in his back yard. All I can say for now is that involves matches and chemistry. I added slide show of pictures and will contine to add important pictures and we continue to make progress.

May 2nd

The weekend of May 2nd Kludge and Creamy (sounds like a nasty Ben and Jerry's ice cream) will be visiting for Phase 1 Testing. We are going to rent the airplane and fly to small grass strip where the testing will take place. Here we will be able to remove the baggage door and test the SIMP Launcher with it actually in the aircraft. Other priorities will be error compensation, practice runs with B3C2 software, in cockpit drills with SIMP Launcher, and other mission planning tasks.

Other stuff

Please email at cookedan@gmail.com if you any bowling balls. We want to get the bowling balls as early as possible so we can adjust their weights if need be. We have to group them in threes of equal weights because we will be dropping three at a time. If we can't get three equal weights we will just drill holes in the heavier ones until they match the weight of lighter ones.

Right now we are planning on using the same location but we are open to other locations, so if you can recommend one email as well.

And So IT Begins!

Mission Planning
The Mission Planning session took place in STL and this post is a quick recap. Kludge (Dan Kult) has already thrown his usual enthusiasm into the new logo design and a work up of what the new delivery system might look like. I think this year we will be going with T-Shirts since I think that will be a easier and cheaper than the patch.
So what did we decide:
- The date is being switched to the 4th of July weekend, exactly when on the weekend is yet to be determined
- We are adding ripple multiple this year which will allow us to drop multiple bombs in one run.
- We also need to figure out exactly how to setup the delivery system. Last year we couldn't get it out the door so we might need something to prop the door open.
- We are going to add recording to the software so we can review are results in the mission debrief.
- The software is also going to take into account vertical velocity this year.
Location
We are considering moving the location to a more open area that would allow better viewing. We'll see on this one. If we can find a better spot we'll do it there but we can always use the same location. It worked just fine.

Target

We need a better target that we can see from the air, and that's probably a little easier to hit.
Motto
Vote to the right for the motto, or if you have a better one put in the comments. Personally I like the Supero Omnia because its a good description of me.
Other To-dos
- Creamy/White Devil/Anand needs to get a flight suit, so he can match.
- We should probably all get some Aviator sunglasses, for OBVIOUS reasons
- I need to remeasure the plane and get more exact measurements
- Kludge needs figure out any surprises like explosions or smoke
- Hopefully this year we can have better markings so we know exactly how far we miss by
- Munitions!! Anybody have any bowling balls to donate? Let us know.

Hail to the Victors!

Sorry I couldn't resist. Anyways we were 100% completely and totally Victorious, and the end results were better than expected despite some unforeseen circumstances.

Here's how things went down.
0910 - Very sketchy takeoff from 2E8, pretty nerve racking, bad start.
0916 - We overfly the field and are already late, which means gliders could start taking off at any time
0920 - Anand can not get the delivery device outside the plane, ut oh.
0921 - Anand, uses his Bombadier expertise and knowledge to determine we can safely proceed with him dropping the bombs by hand. Dan and I trust his vast experience and agree.
0925 - Can't see everyone until about 5 seconds until drop, can't see target until about 3 seconds before drop.
0926 - First drop with the Rubber Safety Oridance(aka Bouncy Ball), nothing bad happens.
0927 - Once again we rely on Anand's years of expertnessosity to decide it will be safe with a 10.0 pound water melon.
0930 - Watermelon is dropped and no one dies. Confidence is rising.
0935 - Second watermelon kills exactly no one.
0940 - Still no gliders have taken off which is crazy, We Drop The Bowlign Ball Bomb, and land withing 15 feet!!! which means we were within 0.08 seconds of being perfect! Amaizing! (purposefully spelled that way)
0945 - Safely depart

Miss distances Rubber Bomb(75ft), Melon1(25ft), Melon2(75ft),Bowling Ball(15ft) !!!!!!

Here is the video of the bowling ball, we will have more video and pictures to come once everything is montaged up and combined.

Also I had to add that spectacular picture of us in flight suits.

Itenerary, When are we doing what?

The Bowling Ball Bomb Barbeque and Pool Party
presented by
ShowMeTheRent.com
Will take plane on SUNDAY morning! Times are eastern.

The Plan is as Follows
0800: Get to ARB
0815: Take off from ARB
0830: Land at 2E8 for loading
0900: DROP THE BOMB
0930: Return to 2E8 for unloading
1000: Return to ARB

The plan is to first drop a rubber ball, then cantaloupe, then the bowling ball. 0900 is not firm but we won't do it any earlier. We will communication by cell phone right before we take off from the second airport. Josh Norman will be in charge at the drop site so listen to him. He will be communicating with us in the plane.

Directions were sent out in the last email but as a refresher its west of Pinckney on M-36. Turn left at Howlett, and its about half a mile down. I will make sure there is a sign where you need to turn. It's just a two track and there won't be much parking so you might have to park on the street.
Make sure you're not wandering through the woods at about 9am looking for everybody!
Call me right now if you're not sure where to go. Also people will be leaving from my house to go watch at about 8:30 so feel free to go to my house first so you can get a ride or at least follow.

Bring $10 if you want to buy a mission patch, they are pretty sweet. Ask Jenny she will have them, first come first serve.
